I gave the books ratings of 4 stars, 4.5 stars, then 5 stars for The Hero of Ages because that final book SLAYED ME.

I found listening to the series made it easier to digest if I was reading it, I wouldn’t have been as hyped to pick up the other books.

I’d love to say more about the characters and the MAGIC SYSTEM! *heart eyes* But reveals about both elements unravels throughout the series in such unexpected ways!!! And I don’t want to spoil it, obviously. Identity is constantly changing, constantly faceted, and it was fascinating to see this played out in Sanderson’s writing. The message is incredibly important you don’t just have to be one thing, as long as you’re content. Sanderson forces his characters to address identity heavily in his trilogy. That said, there were quieter moments with Vin (and Elend, among many others) that were slow-burning and considering. This isn’t usually what I go for in a fantasy, but Vin was an expert at subverting the waiting, with a tendency to just jump in and get sh*t moving. It’s why I love her. This series was politically quite heavy, with maneuvering and plotting at its centre quite a bit. (I’m being deliberately vague, I promise.) That said, my love for the characters (particularly Vin and Elend) grew in each installment so I’d definitely recommend continuing! The story wraps up neatly in one book, with threads that can unravel into a trilogy afterwards. The Final Empire, book 1, can actually be read as a standalone if you don’t want to commit to an entire trilogy. Sound amazing yet? If I’d known this trilogy was a succession of heists and cleverness and allomancy, I would’ve snapped it up a lot sooner. She becomes part of his crew whose intention is to overthrow the Lord Ruler in a rebellion of the people. We follow Vin, a young street urchin, who’s basically adopted by Kelsier. I’ve never read an author who consistently crafts magical systems and worlds as uniquely as Sanderson does and this trilogy is no exception. Book 1 is The Final Empire so that’s all you really need to know for now. That said, he has to complicate it by having “era 1” and “era 2” for Mistborn. Failing that, publication order is always a good indication! If you’re keen on jumping into Sanderson but are intimidated by his books in a store, go by colour. The covers above are the UK editions (which Australia has too) and they’re coloured with light blue. Okay, even before I get into talking about this trilogy, here’s a Sanderson hack for you.
